The International Symposium on Advanced Robotics and Machine
Intelligence is specially organized for
Professor Suguru Arimoto, Ritsumeikan University, for
celebrating his 70th birthday and achievements in academic
research and education. Prof. Arimoto is one of the pioneers in
robotics research and has been studying robotics since early
1970s. He has made many original works with significant impacts
on the advancement of robotics, including discovery of the
unique structure of robot dynamics, development of
passivity-based control theory and iterative learning control
for robot manipulators, proposal of sensory manipulation control
for multi-fingered robot hands, etc. His contributions are not
limited to robotics. Prof. Arimoto has also made many
significant contributions to information theory, control theory
and signal processing. He has received numerous awards from
professional societies like IEEE, RSJ, SICE, and governments,
including the IEEE Best Paper Award in Information Theory and
the 2000 Engineering Achievement Award by the Japanese Emperor.
This symposium is associated with the 2006 IEEE/RSJ
International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS
2006). For IROS 2006, please refer to

We
have invited many renowned speakers to deliver distinguished
talks during the symposium, which will be held at the Beijing
International Convention Centre on October 9 and 10, 2006. The
